Our Premier Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Spot.

Initially, this album might appear more like a difficult academic challenge rather than the latest popular music project by an artist who just had a previous single featured a global pop star. Broken into four distinct sections and voiced in thirteen tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic album that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often via the perspective of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched skyward here, supported by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album succeeds in avoid dry academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, and sole credit belonging to Rosalía. While this is not the first time album to alchemize the past with modern styles, its stakes feel much greater here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, you still desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This playful spirit shines clearly during a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, and we hear a gleeful giggle and a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in like comedic impact. The song then segues into the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never exactly know—or even want to predict—where you is going next."

Nearly every song finishes in a completely different place from where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins out moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has become the artist's first release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spins skyward. This trick gets echoed by another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully controls its own inherent excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast where the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly creative visionary.
